You Have the Right to be an Idiot. I Have the Right to be an Asshole.

It’s a funny conversation I see a lot. Person A says “You can do what you want, but I can tell you you’re an asshole.” And then person B says “You’re an asshole.” And person A says “It’s my right to say that. I’m not an asshole.” Then person C tells person A that person B can call them an asshole just like they called someone else an asshole….

It’s like a matryoshka doll of taints and privileges.

  1. In comedy writing it’s called “tit for tat”, an escalating exchange of aggressive behavior moving farther and farther away from a realistic resolution.
